The humble timber beam is a core construction material in medieval architecture of all styles, so it was an obvious choice for inclusion in my signature series. The substance has options to control both the age and roughness of the beam so it can create ancient beams full of woodworm and old nails for you downtrodden serf's hovels as well as freshly carved beams for the fanciest of banquet halls. It doesn't even need to be used for beams though if you reduce the intensity of the shaping parameters you can output plain woods to use on more refined wooden objects.
It is part of my Medieval themed Signature Collection for Substance Source which I had the pleasure of working on with the awesome people of the Substance Source team over at Adobe. I set myself a few goals for the set. The most important of which was thorough customisability of each material, I wanted each substance in the collection to have numerous parameters with variations of the main graph could easily be created to give the user a lot of flexibility to customise each material to the needs of their specific projects.
