Medieval Thatch Roof - Substance Source Signature Collection

The humble thatch roof. A mainstay of medieval environments. This was an obvious material to include, but also quite a daunting one. The first thing I wanted to get right was the layering of the thatch. I wanted to have visible bundles, with as little intersection between the strands of straw as possible. Once that was sorted everything else fell into place. Like the rest of my series, I worked to add variation potential to the parameters allowing outputs for very clean ordered thatch to extremely rough mossy thatch. The ridge trim and alpha edge can be turned off to allow for a 2-way tiling material. As an extra, there are also options to add alpha strips to the material which would allow you to use with a layered geometry approach to build volume.

It is part of my Medieval themed Signature Collection for Substance Source which I had the pleasure of working on with the awesome people of the Substance Source team over at Adobe. I set myself a few goals for the set. The most important of which was thorough customisability of each material, I wanted each substance in the collection to have numerous parameters with variations of the main graph could easily be created to give the user a lot of flexibility to customise each material to the needs of their specific projects.
